Recruiting Technical People

This class teaches how to find and hire the new talent that your company needs. You'll learn how to tap into the best sources for leads. We'll examine the differences in hiring from college vs. industry, as well as short-term contract vs. a permanent addition.

You will learn the power of a properly written job description, and how to go from there to creating an ad that will get the right responses. We discuss what to look for, and look out for, on resumes. The secrets to efficient early round screenings, phone interviews and campus interviews, will be shared. The class will also discuss the question of if, how, and when, to use recruiting firms.

Class participants will do mock-interviews from both sides of the table, learning and practicing techniques to keep the interview on-track and getting to the information needed to make a hire/no-hire decision. Consideration will be give to how to handle the really exceptional candidates, be they exceptionally good or bad.

We will cover the legal side of recruiting, to keep you from running afoul of the ADA or other Equal Employment Opportunity laws. Topics include what can and can't be asked during an interview. For example, it is illegal to ask if the applicant is a U.S. citizen, but perfectly legal and appropriate to ask if they are eligible to work in the United States.

In the end, it all comes down to hire/no-hire. We will talk about and practice, making that final decision. Several different approaches will be presented, along with an examination of when to use each of them.
